If I could offer you only one tip for the future, "sunscreen" would be it.

The long-term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists, whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience.
I will dispense this advice NOW!
Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth.
Oh, never mind.

You will not understand the power and beauty of your youth until they've faded.

But trust me, in 20 years, you'll look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you can't grasp now how much possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked.
You are not as fat as you imagine.
Don't worry about the future.
Or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubble gum.

The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind, the kind that blindside you at 4 pm on some idle Tuesday.
Do one thing every day that scares you.

Sing
Don't be reckless with other people's hearts.
Don't put up with people who are reckless with yours.

Floss
Don't waste your time on jealousy.
Sometimes you're ahead, sometimes you're behind.
The race is long and, in the end, it's only with yourself.

Remember compliments you receive.
Forget the insults.
If you succeed in doing this, tell me how.
Keep your old love letters.
Throw away your old bank statements.

Stretch
Don't feel guilty if you don't know what you want to do with your life.
The most interesting people I know didn't know at 22 what they wanted to do with their lives.
Some of the most interesting 40-year-olds I know still don't.

Get plenty of calcium.
Be kind to your knees.
You'll miss them when they're gone.

Maybe you'll marry, maybe you won't.
Maybe you'll have children, maybe you won't.
Maybe you'll divorce at 40.

Maybe you'll dance the funky chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary.
Whatever you do, don't congratulate yourself too much, or berate yourself either.
Your choices are half chance.
So are everybody else's.

Enjoy your body.
Use it every way you can.
Don't be afraid of it or of what other people think of it.
It's the greatest instrument you'll ever own.

Dance
Even if you have nowhere to do it but your living room.
Read the directions, even if you don't follow them.

Do not read beauty magazines.
They will only make you feel ugly.

"Brother and sister together we'll make it through,
Someday a spirit will take you and guide you there
I know that you're hurting but I've been waiting there for you
and I'll be there just helping you out
whenever I can..."

Get to know your parents.
You never know when they'll be gone for good.

Be nice to your siblings.
They're your best link to your past and the people most likely to stick with you in the future.
Understand that friends come and go,
but with a precious few you should hold on.
Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and lifestyle, because the older you get,
the more you need the people who knew you when you were young.
Live in "New York City" once, but leave before it makes you hard.
Live in "Northern California" once, but leave before it makes you soft.

Travel
Accept certain inalienable truths:
Prices will rise.
Politicians will philander.
You, too, will get old.
And when you do, you'll fantasize that when you were young, prices were reasonable, politicians were noble, and children respected their elders.

Respect your elders.
Don't expect anyone else to support you.
Maybe you have a trust fund.
Maybe you'll have a wealthy spouse.
But you never know when either one might run out.
Don't mess too much with your hair or by the time you're 40 it will look 85.
Be careful whose advice you buy, but be patient with those who supply it.
Advice is a form of nostalgia.

Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.
But trust me on the sunscreen.

se eu pudesse dar um conselho em relacao ao futuro,
diria: usem filtro solar.
Os benefícios, a longo prazo, do uso do filtro solar
foram cientificamente provados. Os demais conselhos
que dou baseiam-se unicamente em minha propria
experiencia. Eis aqui um conselho.
Desfrute do poder da beleza de tua juventude.
Ou esqueca, voce só vai compreender o poder e a beleza
de tua juventude quando já tiverem desaparecido.
Mas acredite em mim, dentro de vinte anos, voce,
olhará suas fotos e compreenderá, de um jeito que
nao pode compreender agora, quantas oportunidades se
abriram para voce era realmente fabuloso/a. Voce
nao eh tao gordo quanto voce imagina. Nao se
preocupe com o futuro, ou se preocupe, se quiser,
sabendo que a preocupacao eh tao eficaz quanto
tentar resolver uma equacao de algebra
mascando chiclete. É quase certo que os problemas que
realmente têm importancia em tua vida sao aqueles que
nunca passaram por tua mente, tipo aqueles que
tomam conta de voce as 4 da tarde em alguma
terça feira ociosa. Todos os dias, faça alguma coisa
que seja assustadora. Cante.. nao trate os sentimentos alheios
de forma irresponsavel. Nao tolere aqueles que agem de forma
irresponsavel em relacao a voce. Relaxe.. nao perca tempo com a inveja.
Algumas vezes voce ganha, algumas vezes voce perde.
A corrida eh longae, no final, tem que contar só com voce.
Lembre-se dos elogios que recebe. Esqueça os insultos.

Guarde tuas cartas de amor.
Jogue fora teus velhos estratos bancários. Estique-se..
Nao tenha sentimento de culpa se nao sabe muito bem
o que quer ser da vida.
As pessoas mais interessantes que conheco nao tinham,
aos 22 anos, nenhuma ideia do que fariam da vida.
Algumas das mais interessantes de 40 anos que conheco
ainda nao sabem.
Tome bastante calcio, seja gentil com teus joelhos.
Voce sentirá falta deles quando nao funcionarem mais.
Talvez voce se case, talvez nao.
Talvez tenha filhos, talvez nao.
Talvez se divorcie aos 40, talvez dance uma valsinha quando
tiver 75 anos de casamento.
O que quer que faca, nao se orgulhe nem se critique demais.
Todas as tuas escolhas tem 50% de chance de dar certo,
Como as escolhas de todos os demais.
Curta teu corpo da maneira que puder, nao tenha medo dele
ou do que as outras pessoas pensem dele.
Ele eh teu maior instrumento.
Dance.. mesmo que o unico lugar que voce tenha para dancar
seja tua sala de estar. Leia todas as indicacoes,
mesmo que voce nao as siga. Nao leia revista de beleza, a
unica coisa que elas fazem é mostrar voce como uma
pessoa feia.
Saiba entender teus pais, voce nunca soube a falta que
vai sentir deles. Seja agradavel com teus irmaos, eles sao
teu maior vinculo com teu passado e aqueles que, no futuro,
provavelmente nunca deixaram voce na mao. Entenda que
os amigos vao e vêm, mas que ha um punhado deles,
precioso, que voce tem que guardar com carinho.
Trabalhe duro para transpor os obstaculos geograficos
e da vida, porque, quanto mais voce envelhece tanto mais
precisa das pessoas que conheceram voce na juventude.

voce em uma pessoa dura. More na Califórnia, mas mude-se
antes de tornar-se uma pessoa muito mole".
Viaje.. aceite certas verdades eternas:
Os precos sempre vao subir; os politicos sao todos
corruptos e mulherengos; voce tambem vai envelhecer.
E quando envelhecer, vai fantasiar que, quando era jovem,
os precos eram acessiveis, os politicos eram nobres
de almae as criancas respeitavam os mais velhos.
Respeite as pessoas mais velhas. Nao espere apoio de ninguem.
Talvez voce tenha uma aposentadoria.
Talvez tenha um conjugue rico.
Mas, voce nunca sabe quando um ou outro podem desaparecer.
Nao mexa muito em teu cabelo. senao, quando tiver 40 anos
vai ficar com a aparencia de 85.
Tenha cuidado com as pessoas que lhe dao conselhos,
mas seja paciente com elas. Conselho é uma forma de nostalgia.
Dar conselhos eh uma forma de resgatar o passado
da lata de lixo, limpa-lo, esconder as partes feias e
recilca-los por um preco maior do que realmente vale.
Mas, acredite em mim quando eu falo do filtro solar.
